More than two centuries later this show is bigger and better than ever
There's one sure-fire way to determine if a public event is a big deal. And that is flashing matrix signs on the motorway advising drivers which exit to use.
There's rows of eclectic and colourful stalls serving freshly-squeezed fruit juice and Scandinavian-style hot tubs, a children fair ground and food and beverages to suit whatever you fancy. There's ripples of polite applause as another horse cleanly completes the show jumping course and cheers as a smart sheep dog successful herds a gaggle of geese in the Salesbury Arena.
"I'm in my 80s now and I've been coming here for decades and the weather has been worse than this but it will never stop us," says a beaming lady serving drinks in a catering tent.Retired Eddie Worthington, who used to work in social services, has thrown himself into his passion for tractors. He can be found over at the vintage tractors display, most likely next to his beloved Nuffield 342 model, which won best in show in 2022.
"They are amazing pieces of engineering and they can still do a job. But people associate them with the romanticism of the times, especially the 50s."
