Dozens of towns across New South Wales are at risk of being without a single GP in the coming years.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, around 60 towns in the state including Singleton, Moree, Cessnock and Gunnedah have been identified as being at risk of critical doctor shortages.
New South Wales Rural Doctors Network Chief Executive Richard Colbran says there is not a single town in rural New South Wales which “isn’t at risk of being able to sustain viable primary care”. The exodus of doctors from the workforce is being blamed on financial pressures facing rural general practices, increased specialisation and increased workload pressures deterring young doctors.
