Vladimir Putin’s troops have gathered in Belarus for “intensive combat training” just days before the country prepares to pass a startling new law, in a sign Russia is preparing its closest ally to enter the war in Ukraine.

The announcement from the Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday came just a day after Belarus said it was moving troops and military hardware to counteract a perceived terrorism threat.

The Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu was in Minsk on Saturday, further sparking fears that Russian President Vladimir Putin is heaping pressure on President Lukashenko to aid his failing campaign in Ukraine. The Belarusian parliament is simultaneously preparing to introduce the death penalty for government officials and soldiers convicted of high treason.
