When Western countries imposed aggressive financial sanctions on Russia in the past week in retaliation to its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, Moscow was not their only target.
Initially, it looked like a weak-kneed Europe, particularly Germany, would steer clear of imposing heavy sanctions because of the burden it would impose on the continent’s economy and citizens. Hence, Prime Minister Scott Morrison and cabinet ministers pushed the US and Europe to go harder on financial sanctions and to provide more military equipment to Ukraine.
