South Australian Police said although the footage was “distressing” no action will be taken against the officer. 9News

An Aboriginal police officer filmed stoning a wombat to death in South Australia has apologised for sharing the video on social media.

In a handwritten letter given exclusively to NITV News, Senior Community Constable Waylon Johncock said it was never his intention to "cause distress". "I completely agree with our traditional elders that the footage should have never been posted on social media because it has given the outside world a look into our traditional ways of living and for that I am deeply sorry," the media outlet quoted Constable Johncock as writing."These practices are a normal way of life for us Aboriginal people here on the Far West Coast.

"As you are all aware, I was in my religious capacity and was within my cultural right to take the life of the wombat and that it was cleaned, passed onto family and was then cut up and shared out amongst multiple other families." A week ago, Constable Johncock's employer Commissioner Grant Stevens of the South Australian Police said while he found the footage "distressing" no action would be taken against the officer."I still find some of the content of the video disturbing – I take personal displeasure in seeing any animal distressed, or being killed as the wombat was killed," Commissioner Stevens said.
