South Australia has recorded a massive surge in new coronavirus cases as the premier issues a dire warning about the Omicron variant.Eight people with COVID are being treated in hospital in SA, one of whom is in intensive care.

Premier Steven Marshall said testing indicates that of all the active cases in the state, approximately 70 per cent are of the Omicron strain. “We’re less than four weeks into understanding what this disease is all about but what we already know is that it is highly transmissible. “What we are very concerned about, despite the lower level severity, is the very significant increase in transmissibility over every other variant that has been considered before. We do have to take action.“It will overwhelm our health system, not because it is more severe, but just because of the sheer volume of people who are likely to become infected with this variant of concern.”
