London's Mayor has transgressed in the eyes of Team Keir
– sleek Sadiq can be engaging but a tad vacuous and his lengthy time in power in City Hall has left a light footprint on London, apart from a wearing tendency to tell us that “the Mayor” is responsible for any transport that turns up on time, but the Government is to blame for everything else.
Inconveniently for the Labour leadership, this delivers a ready hit to the Conservatives whose anti-Labour campaigns are likely to acquire a more “GB News” tone in an attempt to create clearer dividing lines. Mark Harper, the Transport Secretary obliged by calling the low-emissions expansion a “war on motorists”.
By brandishing defiance on Ulez, Khan has transgressed in the eyes of Team Keir and reminded many of the internal rancour of the Ed Miliband years, which the Labour leader has been keen to mend by bringing the last-but-one leader into his inner council. The requirement has been not to raise friction levels, or at least not in public.
A problem which might rightly be laid at the door of central government – how long must we wait to make cities cleaner and greener, as we protect strained household budgets? – has ended up in an uneasy Opposition stand-off and a free hit for the Government.
