Matar later entered a not-guilty plea during a brief court hearing Saturday. He wore a black and white inmate’s jumpsuit, and his hands were cuffed in front of him. The man sharing the stage with Rushdie was 73-year-old Ralph Henry Reese, who runs an organization that provides sanctuary to writers under threat of political persecution.
