Hurd was released from a federal prison in Bastrop last month after serving 10 years of a 15-year sentence for drug trafficking.

Jason Garrett was the head coach of the Cowboys when Hurd tried to purchase large amounts of cocaine and marijuana from an undercover agent in December 2011. Garrett had been Hurd’s offensive coordinator before that.old headquarters in Valley Ranch when a reporter told him the news about Hurd. He staggered three steps backward. Not figuratively.

Hurd wasn’t the first — and won’t be the last — to use Christianity or any other religion as a shield to deflect or disguise criminal behavior. But he did it better than most. Members of the Dallas organization with a background in law enforcement were equally stunned to learn about Hurd.
