Matildas star Sam Kerr is out of Australia’s first two games against Ireland and Nigeria in a huge setback to the team’s Women’s World Cup hopes.
The pressure is now on her and Foord to lead the attacking line - not only on Friday night, but in next Thursday’s clash with Nigeria at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia’s second Group B fixture.
Australia’s round of 16 match - assuming they qualify for the next phase - will be played on August 7 in either Sydney or Brisbane, with the location dependent on whether they finish top or second in the group. She had ice on her calf after coming off against France but, when she was shown on the big screen, immediately gestured that it was nothing to worry about - and her full involvement in subsequent training sessions suggests it is indeed a fresh ailment.
