San Antonio is much happier with its police department than are other cities
Protestors march downtown past a San Antonio Police officer to San Antonio Travis Park, on Wednesday, June, 3, 2020.SAN ANTONIO — More San Antonio residents are satisfied with the police department now than four years ago, bucking national trends that show most cities’ trust in law enforcement fell after widespread protests for police reform in summer 2020.
San Antonio has commissioned the survey every two years since 2008 but skipped it in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The city’s lowest overall satisfaction rate stood at 63 percent in 2016. The changes the city has made could lead to broader satisfaction with police, even as groups — including Act4SA — want to seeMcManus banned no-knock warrants and police chokeholds. The police chief also responded quickly by firing former officer James Brennand after he shot teenager Erik Cantu, Tomas said, though the incident happened after the survey. Brennand shot Cantu multiple times at a McDonald’s on the North Side, where the teen was eating a burger in his car.
Those cities have also had more sustained activism toward police reform and accountability, Tomas said. With that comes more public awareness of police behavior, possibly leading to lower approval ratings. A lot of the nonprofit’s work revolves around education.
