Daniel 'Chucky' Sanders has joined Toby Price as the only two Australians to win the prestigious rally raid after maintaining his overall lead in Stage 12.
hub in SBS On Demand Daniel Sanders has held onto his nine-minute lead over Spaniard Tosha Schareina in the 12th and final stage of the Dakar Rally to win the bikes category of the event in Shubaytah overnight. The 30-year-old Victorian joins Toby Price, who abandoned this year's event after Stage 6, as the only Australians to win the off-road endurance event. Price previously won the bikes class in 2016 and 2019.
This is my fifth attempt and from the first time I raced it, it was a really important thing ," Sanders said. "We've done that, and to have a consistent race and to have control from start to finish was a pretty cool experience. "I can't wait to go to sleep and celebrate in my dreams." Fellow Aussie Toby Hederics finished 19th in the bikes category, four hours and 46 minutes behind Sanders, and placed ninth in the Rally 2 classification.
