Coal miners are on paid leave at his mine in NSW and workers at his South Australian steelworks are facing an uncertain future, yet steel baron Sanjeev Gupta is about to renovate his $34 million Sydney home.
Workers have been temporarily sent home on full pay at his New South Wales mine and employees at his South Australian steelworks face an uncertain future due to millions of dollars in unpaid bills, yet steel baron Sanjeev Gupta has just secured approval to renovate his $34 million Sydney mansion.South Australian independent MP Frank Pangallo said it was not a good look for the thousands of employees and businesses whose livelihoods depend on Mr Gupta's operations.
Federal Industry Minister Ed Husic told 7.30 it was time for the British industrialist to pay those suppliers owed money."There's a lot of uncertainty about Whyalla and the steelworks, and that uncertainty can be fixed up right now with this simple move by Mr Gupta and GFG: pay your bills, invest in the steelworks and help Whyalla have a much more positive future," Mr Husic said.
"The GFG business in Whyalla is currently navigating one of the most challenging periods in its history, and we understand the anxiety this creates for our people and stakeholders about the future," the statement said. Account filings are overdue for his Australian businesses Liberty Primary Metals Australia and InfraBuild.
Mr Harris said he believed more attention from ASIC was warranted considering the current problems within GFG Alliance. "There are different reports being put about whether or not they've secured that facility and been able to get that loan," he told 7.30.
