The Saskatchewan government announced the creation of two separate plans to address mental health, addictions and homelessness.
The Saskatchewan government announced it’s creating two new multi-year plans, one addressing mental health and addictions and the other addressing homelessness. The plans include funding for one new shelter in Saskatoon and one in Regina for people with “complex needs” amid growing concern and calls for action. On Friday, Social Services Minister Gene Makowsky, Health Minister Everett Hindley and Mental Health and Addictions Minister Tim McLeod announced the plans in Saskatoon.
Saskatoon and Regina have been epicentres of the intersecting issues of homelessness, mental health and addictions. Encampments have appeared in both cities, Regina Mayor Sandra Masters said she appreciates the wholistic approach and inter-ministerial co-operation. The province is also providing money for community safety officers to patrol the area around the shelters.
When asked how quickly the 120 new emergency beds will be available with winter coming, Makowsky said the government has been able to add capacity in the last several years, “So, I think we’re in decent shape right now.”It is taking place as quickly as we can and within the next couple months we hope to have even more capacity within the province.”Makowsky said the province will move to a model of smaller shelters to avoid concentration in one area.
Due to this focus, the provincial announcement doesn’t include money for supervised consumption sites, he said.
