An Adelaide basketball club is being credited with changing young people’s lives for the better and even helping almost a dozen of them achieve scholarships to play overseas. Community members say more programs like it are needed to divert disadvantaged young people from the antisocial behaviour that is becoming a growing problem in the state.
In 2023, African Communities Council of South Australia launched an inquiry into youth crime that identified gaps in social services, such as trauma counselling, as a reoccurring theme. The report voiced a need for “adequate funding and resources” to combat socio-economic disadvantages experienced by families. Multicultural Affairs minister Zoe Bettison said the state government has invested $2.5 million over four years to deliver the Empowering African Youth Program since that 2023 report.
