The eight-part anthology Erotic Stories is candid rather than coy and gives centre stage to characters and actors we’re not accustomed to seeing in mainstream TV.
SBS says that its eight-part anthology series explores “universal themes from a unique perspective”. The network adds that the local production, made by Lingo Pictures and comprising half-hour instalments, offers episodes “driven by characters who are gay, living with disability, non-binary, middle-aged and/or people of colour”.
Frances O’Connor and Alex Fitzalan in the Erotic Stories episode Come As You Are, which is written by Marieke Hardy. The drive to expand tales of love and lust beyond the types of characters who customarily attract such attention on mainstream television is commendable. However, sometimes such a strictly defined philosophical mission can inhibit a production, rendering it earnest and didactic. Happily, that’s not the case here.
Showcasing the work of eight writers, with episodes directed by Leticia Caceres or Madeleine Gottlieb, presents intimate encounters involving a range of characters while radiating vitality and compromising none of its potency. It’s a thoroughly original work that pulsates with energy as it propels a diversity of protagonists to centre stage.
While there are distinct differences in the style and subject matter of the chapters, the quality remains consistently impressive. And what unites these disparate tales is their concern with intimacy, physical and emotional. They’re all stories of human connection and the many, sometimes surprising and disarming forms that it can take, from unions that are warmly loving to those that are brief and anonymous.
