The NSW opposition has slammed the state government’s handling of a controversial $40 billion corporation which threatens to derail a promise to return to a budget surplus in 2024.as they scramble to resolve a standoff with the Auditor-General over “significant accounting issues” with the Transport Asset Holding Entity , which has delayed her signing off the state’s finances.

The Premier’s office declined to respond to the accusations and referred all questions relating to TAHE to Mr Kean. Mr Mookhey said the Auditor-General’s refusal to sign off on the state’s finances would send “a chilling message to international financial markets” that there was “something massively wrong with the NSW accounts”.

Auditor-General Margaret Crawford was due to appear but has pulled out because of the need to delay signing off on audits of the rail corporation and the state’s finances.HeraldMr Mookhey said the inquiry hearing on Thursday would delve into “precisely what happened during a “mad scramble” over the weekend as the government was “racing to stop TAHE from blowing up the budget”.
