Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the state government is 'not about to start backflipping on issues we’ve promised the community' following a spike in COVID-19 cases the day before restrictions ease for the unvaccinated.

Mr Hazzard was asked whether the government is looking to reimpose restrictions in Newcastle after a COVID-19 outbreak at a nightclub, where a number of revellers are “likely to have the Omicron variant of concern”.“What we’re planning on is making sure the community understands the need to be vaccinated and the need to have boosters.

“Our government in NSW has led the country, we’re not about to start backflipping on issues we’ve promised the community we’ll do but certainly it would be wise for people to take precautions. Restrictions will ease further in NSW on Wednesday with density limits scrapped for all settings and COVID-19 safety plans becoming optional for businesses.

The state recorded 804 coronavirus cases on Tuesday marking the highest daily total in the state since October 2 when 814 infections were detected.
