Calls for a complete revamp of the public grants process are growing louder after a new report into pork barrelling found the former Morrison government splashed almost $2 billion in Coalition seats.
The Grattan Institute’s “New Politics: Preventing pork-barrelling” found the allocation of public grants had been manipulated by both sides of politics in state and federal government.

Picture: NCA NewsWire / Damian Shaw “What we’ve seen across the board is leaving that final decision to the discretion of the minister exposes it to being corrupted.” A raft of recommendations to crack down on the misuse of the grants process were made in the study including removing the minister from having final discretionary powers.
