Scientists were aware of increased volcanic activity at the White Island volcano weeks prior to today’s deadly explosion. 9News
Despite the increase in activity and potential for an eruption, the alert level failed to stop tourists flocking to see the volcano, which attracts more than 10,000 people every year.
The last recorded explosion occurred in April of 2016 when the volcano experienced a "short-lived" eruption and ash was emitted later in September.Prior to 2016, the volcano also experienced an "explosive eruption" in August 2012 followed by heating in the Crater Lake shortly after.
