Josh Hazelwood was already ruled out, with Jhye Richardson and Michael Neser not being picked for the Test due to soreness. The omissions allow Boland to make his debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as Australia tries to wrap up the Ashes. Australia captain Pat Cummins returns to the side, after missing the Adelaide Test because he was a close contact of a COVID-19 case.
"Jhye and Nes were a little bit sore after Adelaide so we've decided to go with Scotty," Cummins said.Boland will become the second Indigenous man to play Test cricket for Australia after Jason Gillespie.
