During his time as immigration minister, Mr Morrison reportedly proposed building large scale detention centres in Australia to house around 30,000 asylum seekers living in the community. The Sydney Morning Herald reports Mr Morrison took the multi-billion dollar plan to the expenditure review committee in 2014, with the then Treasurer Joe Hockey labelling the proposal as inhumane. A spokesperson for the Prime Minister says he has no recollection of the proposal.
