Scott Morrison defends his decision to secretly take joint control of several ministries, amid claims he also appointed himself to a fourth ministry.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has defended his extraordinary move to jointly appoint himself to several ministries in secret, including the health, finance and resources portfolios.

"I don't recall that ... I don't dispute that and my answer for all that is the same, we were dealing with an incredible amount of discretion and money being paid," Mr Morrison told Sydney radio station 2GB."Fortunately, none of these [appointments] in the case of the finance and the health portfolio were ever required to be used.

The former prime minister said he appointed himself as a backup to other ministers at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic as a "safeguard and a redundancy".
