'Tribalism' in Australia could help extremism take hold, Scott Morrison warns | CroweDM
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has warned against a growing culture of “tribalism” in Australian life that could help extremism take hold in the wake of the terrorist attack in Christchurch.
The Prime Minister has called for a calmer approach to public debate to counter the “shouting from the fringes” on issues including multiculturalism and migration.“As debate becomes more fierce, the retreat to tribalism is increasingly taking over, and for some, extremism takes hold,” Mr Morrison told the Australia Israel Chamber of Commerce in Melbourne.
Mr Morrison quoted the American author, Arthur Brooks, the president of the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank, who said recently, “What we need is not to disagree less, but to disagree better.”“When we disagree better, we engage with respect, rather than questioning each other’s integrity and morality,” he said.
Mr Morrison has warned about the threat from asylum seekers in his attack on Labor for supporting the refugee medical transfer bill passed by the Parliament last month.“They may be a paedophile, they may be a rapist, they may be a murderer and this bill would mean that we would just have to take them,” Mr Morrison said of the refugees who might be transferred.
