Scott Morrison says 'we are not going back to shutting down people’s lives' as COVID infections hit record levels in parts of Australia and the Omicron variant remains a concern.

“It is too early to tell how Omicron will play out for the hospital system. We’re nervous, and we are treating the situation with caution.”

Speaking at the same event, Department of Health Secretary, Professor Brendan Murphy, said while there was still a lot to learn about Omicron the early signs around its severity were positive. “But we still need to learn more, we have to get information from other countries who now have significant clusters of this virus and we’re still doing lab tests on this variant.”“We're in the very early phases of the Omicron variant and we need to understand it better," he said.
