Teams from Melbourne Zoo and Parks Victoria travelled to Simpson in south-west Victoria on Thursday to assess the adult Australian fur seal.
A Melbourne Zoo spokesperson said the intervention was "required" after the seal failed to find its way back to the open ocean on the same path it used to find the farm.A video of the seal galumphing past a herd of cows on Monday captured the attention of social media users across Australia. "On assessment the seal was found to be elderly, and suffering from blindness in one eye and dental fractures," the spokesperson said.
"It was determined that euthanasia was the kindest welfare outcome as the seal would have been unable to forage and live naturally in the wild."A necropsy will be conducted in coming days."
