A search is underway for an Australian man who failed to make it back to shore after saving a German swimmer from being swept away in rough waters at a Bali beach.

Craig Laidley had been walking along Balian Beach in Tabanan when he leapt into action after hearing shouts from young German swimmer shouting who had encountered trouble in the water on Wednesday afternoon. Indonesian police have been searching for Mr Laidley for more than 24 hours hoping for any sign of life, but fears are growing due to the"extreme conditions" of the waves.
" night our team tried to search for victims using land searches and today the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office dispatched 10 people with land and sea SRU divisions," Nyoman Sidakarya, the head of the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office said.Mr Laidley's family have also published pictures of the missing Australian to social media pleading for public assistance in the search.
