The incident followed three fatal attacks in the state in 2023, one of which was also at Granites - a spot popular with surfers. Emergency services, Streaky Bay council members and locals searched the area for four days but did not find Mr Appleby.Police said a surfboard had been recovered from the water. The surfing and local communities are grieving the loss of the man and 'talented footballer', with friends describing Mr Appleby as a 'loved character' and 'an all round good bloke'.
