The death toll from Queensland's devastating floods has risen to two as relentless rainfall continues to batter the state's far north. Authorities warn of ongoing major flooding and urge communities to remain vigilant.
A second fatality has been reported in Queensland 's devastating flood emergency as relentless downpours continue to wreak havoc on the state's far north. The body of an 82-year-old woman was discovered in a sugarcane field on Fulton Dr in Bermside, near Ingham , shortly after 11am on Tuesday. A neighbor had last seen the woman inside her two-story home around 6pm on Monday. Police stated that the neighbor grew concerned when they were unable to locate her within the residence the following day.
Her remains were found in the field after floodwaters subsided. The Ingham community was already grappling with the loss of a 63-year-old woman who perished when an SES boat assisting individuals through floodwaters collided with a tree and capsized on Sunday. While other flood-affected communities in the state's far north have begun returning to their homes, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant in anticipation of further heavy rainfall. Record-breaking rainfall has inundated north Queensland over the past week, triggering widespread flooding that has resulted in power outages, road damage, and the displacement of hundreds of people. There has been some respite with the intensity of the rainfall decreasing, offering a glimmer of hope that the massive cleanup operation facing the inundated region can commence. However, the Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings of ongoing major flooding in multiple catchments despite the isolated and less widespread showers. Major flood warnings remained in effect for the Herbert and Haughton River catchments late on Tuesday after the region was battered by relentless rain. While 24-hour rainfall totals across the coast have diminished to a range of 50mm to 100mm, some areas continue to experience heavy downpours, with Mackay recording 193mm and approximately 200mm falling along the coastline stretching from Cairns to Innisfail. The bureau emphasized that cumulative rainfall totals from the past week are contributing to the persistent flood risk for the region. Seven-day rainfall totals have exceeded 1m for certain areas, with 1697mm recorded at Cardwell Range, 1693mm at Rollingstone, and 1662mm at Macknade Sugar Mill
