A senior Qantas executive has resigned, following a torrid three weeks for the airline business while it awaits a key legal ruling following its High Court appeal.

in 2020 the airline had actually developed the outsourcing plans a decade beforehand to outsource all airport ground handling work – which includes baggage handling, aircraft cleaning and ground crew work – to third-party contractors to save $100 million a year as part of its “COVID recovery plan”.

“We were hiring into Qantas ground services as recently as February and making long-term investments in new ground handling equipment. We wouldn’t have done that if we had planned to outsource it.” The verdict will be handed down in Canberra, where prime minister Anthony Albanese continues to defend his government from allegations it’s in Qantas’ pocket,Albanese shot back at the opposition on Monday, and referenced the looming verdict as an example of the Coalition’s alleged hypocrisy.

Qantas is one of many listed companies that has been accused of exploiting the current labour hire rules by splitting its workforce across 21 external companies and 17 other subsidiaries.
