The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) warns of heavy rainfall, large hail, and damaging winds across parts of New South Wales today. Severe thunderstorms are expected, particularly in the afternoon and evening, with a risk extending to the east coast including Queensland border towns. The BoM has cancelled a severe weather warning for the South Coast, but urges residents in vulnerable areas to avoid floodwaters and prepare for potential storms.
After an intense soaking across large swaths of the state including Sydney yesterday, the BoM says "heavy to intense rainfall, large hail, damaging winds" are possible today.Senior meteorologist Angus Hines warned severe storms are forecast for parts of central NSW as a broad upper level trough rolls across the state.
"Today, we anticipate other parts of New South Wales to see these severe thunderstorms, especially once we get into the afternoon hours, two o'clock, three o'clock through until about 8pm this evening looks to be prime time for that storm development through other areas," Hines said.Senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury also said today's forecast is set to be a little calmer but storms are still likely across the east coast, including some Queensland border towns.
"Heavy rainfall, damaging winds and large hail will all continue a risk throughout the east," she said.As the storms roll across the state towards the coast, more severe weather could develop over the east and north coast of NSW.The humid weather, with tops of 28 degrees in Sydney and 32 degrees in Albury, may whip up some storms on the east coast similar but less severe than yesterday's wild conditions.
The NSW SES has warned locals in the areas most vulnerable areas for flash flooding to never drive through flood waters and to keep clear of creeks and storm drains. However, the BoM earlier this morning cancelled a severe weather warning for the South Coast.Thunderstorms brought strong winds and large hail across the state, with the SES having responded to 559 calls for help across the day."Flash flooding can occur suddenly and without warning.
"With further severe weather likely over the coming days, take steps now to prepare. Park vehicles under cover, tie down loose items and check gutters and drains at your home for blockages.": Stay across all the latest in breaking news, sport, politics and the weather via our news app and get notifications sent straight to your smartphone.
