A powerful thunderstorm ripped through Canberra this evening, causing widespread power outages, downed trees, and localized flooding. The storm brought heavy rain, hail, and strong winds, prompting a severe thunderstorm warning from the Bureau of Meteorology.

A severe thunderstorm swept through Canberra this evening, causing widespread power outages , fallen trees, and localized flooding. The storm hit around 5pm, bringing heavy rain, hail, and strong winds. The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the capital earlier in the evening, with parts of Canberra 's north particularly hard hit. More than 350 households in the inner north, Belconnen, and Gungahlin lost power due to the storm, according to Evoenergy.

Residents in Canberra's north reported 'marble-sized hail', while others experienced flooding, with water entering their homes. Power lines came down across the city's north and south, including in Moncrieff, Ngunnawal, Chisholm, and Barton. Police responded to one minor car crash as the storm raged. Amaroo resident Candice Jones described the experience, saying, 'It really just was whipping the trees around, and then the rain started … it was just slamming into the house, and you can see the rain coming in in sheets. It looked like a coastal storm.'Ms Jones's favorite tree in front of her house was toppled by the storm, as was her neighbor's. She reported the fallen trees to the State Emergency Service, as they were blocking access and causing cars to swerve. By 8pm, the State Emergency Service had received almost 200 requests for assistance across Canberra, primarily for trees that had fallen on roads and driveways. The SES, ACT Fire and Rescue, ACT roads crews, and ACT Rural Fire Service were all deployed to respond to the storm's aftermath. The Bureau of Meteorology's Elenka Duma reported hail had fallen across Canberra, with 10-20mm of rainfall recorded in a short span of 10-20 minutes after 5pm. Large wind gusts were also recorded throughout the Canberra region. Stormy conditions were anticipated to persist throughout the evening and possibly into the morning. The Bureau issued and then canceled a second severe thunderstorm warning at around 6:15pm
