A new national survey has revealed more 51% of the migrant women workers interviewed have experienced workplace sexual harassment but most were afraid to report it. Unions New South Wales interviewed 3,388 women of migrant backgrounds - mostly women on temporary visas.
Federal Minister for the Environment Tanya Plibersek, NSW Minister for Women Jodie Harrison, Unions NSW Secretary Mark Morey, with workers Seventy-five per cent of those women say they didn't report the incidents, as they feared retribution. Experts are calling for significant reforms to make these workers safer.
This was followed by 53 per cent in the horticulture industry, 51 per cent in hospitality, 50 per cent in retail and 42 per cent in the cleaning industry. It found women on temporary visas don’t think their employers are doing enough to protect them, and a significant number of women walked out of their jobs because they felt they were in danger.

I came in the next day to see him. He offered to sit at a nearby cafe away from his family so he could better support me and I trusted him. As I was in the car, the first thing he did was he grabbed my face and kissed me right on my lips.""He started driving away.
Mark Morey says migrants come to Australia to seek opportunity but can be instead confronted by horrific workplace exploitation. Sexual comments and jokes were the most common type of harassment , as well as intrusive questions about private life or physical appearance , repeated or inappropriate invitations to go on dates , unwelcome touching, hugging, kissing, or invasion of space , inappropriate staring or leering and inappropriate physical contact .
