The father of 17-year-old Charlize Zmuda, killed in a shark attack at Bribie Island, Queensland, urges the community not to abandon the beach but to remain vigilant about safety. Zmuda, a talented surf lifesaver and musician, was attacked while swimming with her best friend. The tragedy marks the third fatal shark attack in Queensland in three months.
The grief-stricken father of 17-year-old shark attack victim said he is “gutted” by the tragedy but doesn’t want the community to live in fear of the beach. Year 12 student Charlize Zmuda was killed in a shark attack on Monday at Bribie Island, in Queensland . “When I got the tragic news yesterday, I was extremely gutted,” her father Steve Zmuda said. “But something that my wife and I want to say is we don’t want people to stop coming to the beach and enjoying our beach.
“She could hear a piece of music and then ... play it in a heartbeat,” he said. “To have talent taken away right now, that kills me.” Zmuda said his daughter only ever wanted the best for her surf club and local coastal community. “I know that she’s hopefully upstairs with my father and all my family, and they’re all looking after her,” he said. Charlize had been swimming with her best friend who witnessed the attack at the popular beach, north of Brisbane, about 4.45pm on February 3.
