Analysis: ‘Sharpen your pencil’: How NSW salvaged the NRL grand final | proshenks
On Tuesday, ARLC chairman Peter V’landys and NRL CEO Andrew Abdo turned up about 20 minutes late for a long-planned dinner with a small group of executives from Nine, the NRL’s broadcast partner, at the Glass Brasserie in Sydney’s Hilton Hotel.
He was also still fuming over a report on Seven News the night earlier which claimed a deal had already been struck with NSW. After this season’s decider, all bets are off. The parties couldn’t agree beyond this year’s grand final, which will result in the event being put out to tender, much like the jewel in the NFL’s crown, the Super Bowl. The public and the participants may be weary from the wrangling, but it will soon recommence.
Abdo was quizzed about the grand final at the NRLW launch on Wednesday morning. At the same time, perhaps pointedly, Perrottet was in Lismore discussing plans for flood relief. “The NSW government has a $123 billion infrastructure spend; ours is $300 million. It’s not even a drop in the bucket, it’s not even a rounding error. To say that it was needed for flood victims is a bit rich.”
