Darts is a male-dominated pub sport with a boorish, beer-soaked image. But that may have just changed forever, thanks to England's Fallon Sherrock becoming the first woman to ever defeat a man at the world championship.

Darts crowds are usually a pretty festive bunch. But there was something truly spine-tingling about the roar that came from the stands at London's Alexandra Palace when Sherrock landed a double 18 to seal her historic triumph, and the echoes are already being heard in Australia.

The first, the British Darts Organisation , runs separate competitions but does not offer enough money for women to make a real living from it. Twelve months on and it looks like a masterstroke. Sherrock, 25, declared on Twitter after her win that she'd "done it for the girls" and those who live and breathe darts could instantly feel the impact.

"If you look at the physical aspects of the sport, there's no reason why the ladies can't compete on even footing with the men. To what level they can compete ... they control their own destiny, really."
