Georgia Potter Butler has been a bridesmaid 11 times. It cost her $22,000 to cover her dresses, her shoes, hair and makeup. At various times and for various weddings, it has also included kitchen teas, hen’s nights, flights to destinations. The costs mount up. Only once from 11 weddings did the bride pay for Potter Butler’s dress – the others cost somewhere between $200 and $350 for each garment, some of which she says she is unlikely to ever wear again. But never mind the dresses.

and it’s tough to know exactly what gets counted. Bambacas says the wedding industry has constructed an ideal white wedding which is both lavish and expensive and positions the bride as the star of the show. That’s what her parents did when Laura’s sisters got married. “My sisters and my parents paid for everything. My sister had eight bridesmaids.”

Daniel Jones, director of bespoke tailors Zink & Sons, says that in every 10 wedding parties he sees, six grooms will take the bespoke suit option and the groomsmen will find something cheaper elsewhere. Two grooms will pay for all the groomsmen's suits. And the other two grooms? Their groomsmen will each pay to have a bespoke suit at around $2000 a suit.
