The women's singles draw continues to open up at the US Open, with top seed and world number three Karolina Pliskova failing to get past the second round in New York.
The US Open has seen the shock of the tournament on day three, with women's singles top seed Karolina Pliskova knocked out in straight sets.
"It was very close to going into a third set and I was ready for it. She didn't play badly," said Garcia, who celebrated her victory by running the breadth of the court with her arms outstretched. She broke Pliskova in the Czech's first two service games, quickly going 4-0 up, and rallies were in short supply as Garcia used her power to fire angled returns past her bewildered opponent.
The top seed grew visibly frustrated as the match wore on, at one point smashing her racquet after her opponent chased down a shot into the open court to deliver a perfect cross-court return. Osaka improved her serve in the second set, getting 68 per cent of her first serves in and sending down three aces as she wrapped up the match with a minimum of fuss.
Kukushkin outlasted Chilean 13th seed Christian Garin 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in an epic five-setter lasting two minutes shy of four hours.
