There are concerns United States retail giant Amazon may have misled Parliament about workplace safety issues in a number of Australian fulfilment centres.
The Australian reported MPs on the Parliamentary Committee into enhancing economic dynamism and competition suspect the retailer was wrong to have claimed workers had not raised concerns with the company when representatives gave evidence on Tuesday.
However, his testimony was slammed by Transport Workers' Union national secretary Michael Kaine, who said Amazon's attempt to brush off questions was"shocking". "The TWU has conducted several safety inspections at Amazon Flex sites over suspected contraventions of the Workplace Health and Safety Act. On two of those occasions, Amazon called the police on union officials exercising lawful right-of-entry permits.
In March, the US Department of Justice and Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued citations against six warehouses over unsafe working conditions, ergonomic hazards and failure to properly report injuries. The company also recorded a serious injury rate of 6.8 per 100 workers, compared with 3.3 for every 100 workers across all other warehouses.
