Former Labor leader Bill Shorten has praised Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's comments about China's relationship with Russia as he declared Beijing was taking the 'new Labor government and Australia seriously'.
Beijing recently took aim at Mr Albanese for his comments on the communist country's reaction to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in a scathing editorial published by mouthpiece China Daily on Wednesday, declaring his words were “ill-informed” and “ignorant”.
“The fact that China’s felt the need to comment about Prime Minister Albanese shows that Labor is absolutely promoting our national interest and no one else’s.” The China Daily editorial slammed the Prime minister for failing to engage in cooperative talks about repairing the fractured bilateral relationship.
“Just as Russia seeks to recreate a Russian or Soviet empire, the Chinese government is seeking friends, whether it be ... through economic support to build up alliances to undermine what has historically been the Western alliance in places like the Indo-Pacific,” he told the gathering in Madrid.
