Former Victoria Police chief commissioner Simon Overland faces tough questioning at the Lawyer X royal commission, as he concedes Nicola Gobbo's informing could amount to a perversion of the course of justice.
He told the commission he was not aware of who Ms Gobbo was representing — including Tony Mokbel, a statement counsel assisting argued was"fanciful"."Given the huge number of people who were under investigation at that time.
Mr Overland's claim he did not know the intricate details of intelligence Ms Gobbo was passing on and that she was breaching legal privilege — because his detectives never told himEvidence before the commission revealed the gangland lawyer provided information to police about Mokbel's drug cartel while simultaneously representing him in court.
"I suggest to you that what you're saying to the commission is simply not correct, it cannot be right?" Mr Winneke challenged."It beggars belief, Mr Overland, that you could have been giving your investigators those clear and direct instructions and all of this was then permitted to happen throughout early 2006. It is unbelievable, I suggest to you?" Mr Winneke continued.
Asked why he did not keep a record of his meetings if he was concerned about the use of Ms Gobbo, Mr Overland said he trusted his detectives.
