The new British conservative government is facing a clash with the Scottish National Party over the future of the UK.

A second referendum on Scottish independence was ruled out, however Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon insisted her country "cannot be imprisoned in the Union against its will".

She said it would be a "perversion and subversion of democracy" to deny another public vote. Nicola Sturgeon said she would push for another public vote on the question of Scotland's place in the union after her party won 48 out of Scotland's 59 seats in the general election. Image: AP
