Wild horses in Kosciuszko National Park are threatening native species with extinction, says NSW's Environment Minister, with the government proposing aerially culling the animals to control their population.

Wild horse numbers in Kosciuszko National Park have been a long-running problem, and a political flashpoint, with successive governments struggling to manage their population.

On Sunday, Ms Sharpe released a statement which looks likely to re-ignite that debate, revealing NSW was"not on track" to successfully keep the brumby population in line with a government target and was now considering a cull. In January, environmental groups claimed the number of wild horses had surged by more than 4,000 in the past two years, accusing the government of mismanaging the park.

According to government surveys conducted in November, the brumby population stood at 18,814 at the beginning of the year. Picture: John Feder/The Australian.
