Single flu and COVID test coming, but not in time for this flu season | MsEmmaK
Biotech companies are racing to develop rapid antigen tests that can detect the flu in the face of surging cases, but they won’t be widely available in Australia until next year at the earliest.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration has released a set of guidelines for companies about the type of data they want to see before registering a self-test for the flu, but these were only finalised earlier this year. At a panel event earlier this month, experts including executive medical director of international regions at flu vaccine maker Seqirus, Dr Jonathan Anderson, said better testing for the flu could help health systems manage surging cases.Diagnostic testing giant Roche has been working on combined rapid tests to look for COVID and the flu at the same time, with a product to be used in the doctor’s office and a prototype for an at-home test.
