Sisters of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges started enterprise to cover soaring electricity costs
in south-east France are prepared to move more than heaven and earth to save their mountain abbey and pay soaring electricity bills.
The nuns moved in to the abbey in the Ardèche, surrounded by more than 445 hectares of mostly woodland, 18 months ago after the Trappist monks who had previously occupied it for 170 years left because of dwindling numbers and a lack of new recruits. Today, the original eight sisters who arrived in December 2022 have been joined by four new recruits bringing the average age in the order to 41 years.
