Members stunned as LNP dumps Indigenous truth-telling inquiry on first day of new parliament

Vonda Malone, one of five members appointed to oversee Queensland’s truth-telling and healing inquiry, says the government’s handling of the situation went against the core values of the inquiry itself.Vonda Malone, one of five members appointed to oversee Queensland’s truth-telling and healing inquiry, says the government’s handling of the situation went against the core values of the inquiry itself.

Vonda Malone was one of five members appointed to oversee the inquiry. Its task was to investigate the effects of colonisation and compile a report that would provide a roadmap towards a healed and reconciled Queensland. “It speaks volumes for the way this government’s going to treat us when that’s the first thing they do,” he says.

“They got really angry – non-Indigenous people – saying ‘why aren’t we telling these stories? Why aren’t we teaching this in schools?’”. The LNP plans to redirect what remains of the $300m Path to Treaty fund towards improving Indigenous health, housing and education outcomes.
