NSW Health has issued another warning after a sixth person was hospitalised with Legionnaires' disease - urging anyone who has been in the Sydney CBD area over the past two weeks to look out for symptoms.
is a severe form of pneumonia or lung inflammation caused by Legionella bacteria, and is transmitted by breathing infected water vapour from cooling towers of large buildings.
People can be exposed to the bacteria if contaminated water particles from the cooling system are emitted into the air and breathed in. The six people - two women and four men ranging from their 40s to 70s - independently visited Sydney CBD locations between Elizabeth Street, Clarence Street, Park Street and Martin Place in the 10 days prior to their onset of symptoms.
The health body is advising anyone who visited or worked in Sydney CBD in the past two weeks to monitor for symptoms. We are advising people who have been in the Sydney CBD area in the past ten days to be on the lookout for symptoms of Legionnairesâ disease as five people who have developed the disease spent time in the area in the last three weeks.
