Steve Smith conceded defeat in his battle with an umpire but is on top in the contest that counts, writes wutube
Smith clashed with umpire Nigel Llong after being struck twice by Neil Wagner and being denied leg byes, the match official deeming the batsman had not been taking evasive action. He could be booked for dissent if match referee Richie Richardson believes he showed "excessive, obvious disappointment" or "arguing or entering into a prolonged discussion" about an umpire's decision.
History is against the Kiwis. Only three touring sides have won at the MCG after sending the opposition in but they remain firmly in this game. Having met his demise in Perth playing shots to move the game along, circumstances allowed Smith to bat at his preferred tempo. He needed to hit only those within his comfort zone, knowing those outside it would threaten his wicket only if he engaged.
"I thought he played really well. He looked to defend as many balls as he could and obviously hung in there, and he's built himself a nice little innings," New Zealand's pace spearhead Trent Boult said. Smith protested to Llong during the over and sought further clarification from the umpire as players and officials left the field for the first break. He did not appear happy with the umpire's explanation, shaking his head as he left the conversation.
