From “rubbish” phones to smartwatches and screen time bans, executives are trying to find ways to keep their kids off social media while still being able to be in touch.
Already a subscriber? Before Luke Whistler’s eldest daughter Abbey, 16, was allowed to have a smartphone, he asked her to sign a contract stipulating how she would use it – in particular, that she promised to put it away by 9 each night.
“It gives us the same connectivity to them … without giving them unrestricted access to things like TikTok, Instagram or Snapchat,” he said. “We give them time restrictions and let them make their own choices. When they run out of their time on their device, they’re forced to do other things,” he said.Brisbane-based marketing boss Clare Morgans has a strict no-screen policy during the week for her 14- and nine-year-old sons. That means no tablets or videos games from Monday to Friday, and the YouTube app is only allowed on the TV, not on handheld devices.
“When we get home, my husband and I put our phones away because if the kids watch us on devices or social media all day, and we tell them they can’t have it – that’s not going to fly,” Ms Morgans said.
