Sydney creative Martina Calvi didn't know what to expect when she posted a snail mail call-out on Instagram. But eight months on, and there remains daily interest from prospective pen pals.

Through Instagram , Martina Calvi has created a community of young people who have discovered the joys of pen pal s.The 22-year-old Sydney sider said she "honestly didn't know what was getting into" when she began writing to her US pen pal Libbiy, who she met through social media .

The author and "sentimental crafty girl" posted a snail mail swap call-out on Instagram that has since banked over 9,000 comments from around the world."The initial response was very surprising, it blew up very quickly ... people were just commenting like crazy," Ms Calvi said. A pen pal connection project online has let young people "participate in something that's been going on for centuries".Ms Calvi had a pen pal in her childhood, and said the practice was nostalgic for millennials like herself.

Participants share their first name, country, interests or a random fact, and responders reach out to exchange letters."Never give out your address online unless you're very sure that that person is trustworthy, do your background checks and stay safe."She has personally received over 100 letters and tries to read and respond to as many as she can.

"I've had people tell me that they have new friends in other countries, and that they're going to visit them, and they send them little tokens from their country," she said.After seeing Ms Calvi's post, she decided to make her first ever pen pal, and now has 13 she regularly writes to."I have pen pals from all over the US, Mexico, Hong Kong, Australia and Italy. It's a wonderful experience getting to know people from all over the world," Ms Shandilya said.

"Australia is such a beautiful country with so much to do. I am definitely going to visit soon and hopefully meet my pen pals and Martina in person!"The New Yorker said the process had helped her make new friends and find a community where she feels she belongs.
